The question of the day is: what are these round, brown disks in my Chex Mix?
Answer: Melba toasts. And they are clearly the best part of the whole thing.
But when Tammy stared down at the crunchy, brown disks, she couldn’t help but be repulsed at the sight of them.
“They’re delicious,” India said. “Just eat one.”
Tammy continued to watch it warily. “No, I don’t think so.”
“Eat it.”
“No.”
“Eat it.”
“No.”
“Eat it! I’ll give you five circle pretzels if you eat it.”
With extreme hesitation she lifted it to her nose and sniffed.
“Just eat it,” I said. “It’s good.”
“Five. Circle. Pretzels.” India watched her intently. “Eat it.”
With one quick motion she popped the melba toast into her mouth, chewing rapidlylike a bunny. (I don’t know how else to describe it. It was quite funny.) After a minute the chewing slowed and India leaned closer.
“You liked it, didn’t you?”
There was a moment of silence as everyone stared at Tammy. “It wasn’t horrible. Now give me my pretzels.”
India sighed. “Fine,” she began counting out the pretzels. “One–”
“One!” Tammy repeated.
“Two–”
“Two!”
Tammy ate a pretzel.
“Three–”
“Two!”
India’s face was blank as she stared at Tammy. “You get five pretzels.”
“Well, give me another one because you made me eat that brown thing!”
Maybe this was a “you had to be there” thing, but those of us sitting in the hall could not stop laughing. Now I have to go because we are about to have another hall meeting. Is it dramatically promising? Possibly. I will let you know if crazy crap hits the fan!!!
