The holidays are already a boozy affair so why not add it to the cranberry sauce? Grand Marnier is a common addition when you're sousing up the sauce as it complements the cranberry flavor (orange + cranberries = traditional relish). But adding red wine, like this recipe does, enhances the flavor of the cranberries rather than just complementing it. You can control the overall flavor by varying the wine you use. Bonus: You don't have to stand and stir this recipe since it's made in the crock pot. You can make it on the stovetop if you wish, but wouldn't you rather sip the remaining wine while the crock pot does the work?

ingredients

2 cups fresh cranberries
3 1/2 cups cranberry juice
3 tablespoons cornstarch
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
1/4 cup lemon juice
1/2 cup red wine

directions

Pick over the cranberries then place them in the crock pot set on high. Add half of the cranberry juice, cover, and cook for 1-2 hours until the berries begin to burst.

Combine a small amount of the remaining cranberry juice with the cornstarch until it forms a smooth slurry. Stir that into the rest of the remaining cranberry juice until combined and add that to the crock pot.

Add the brown sugar and lemon juice to the crock pot. Mix well, cover, and let cook until it thickens to desired consistency (about 30 minutes).

Turn off the crock pot and stir in the wine. Adjust the seasonings as needed (may depend on the wine you use if you want the cranberry sauce sweeter or more tart).

Serve the cranberry sauce warm or chill it before serving.

To make this on the stovetop: Add the cranberries and half of the cranberry juice to a large saucepan over medium heat. Cook, stirring, until the cranberries start to burst. Combine the cornstarch and a little of the remaining cranberry juice until smooth and stir into the saucepan. Cook, stirring, until the mixture thickens. Slowly stir in the remaining cranberry juice, brown sugar, and lemon juice. Cook, stirring until the mixture is combined and thick. Stir in the wine and let cook for 4-5 more minutes.

We had two Thanksgiving dinners this year and I brought this to both of them and not a drop was left. Everyone loved it and asked for the recipe. As long as it's a drinkable wine you can get away with cheaper wine (which saves $$$ if you double or triple the recipe like we do)
