How to do research for an art project? ›

Drawing As Research

Make a drawing that explores your original question or problem, and any new ideas generated. Think about how you might relate this drawing to any other drawing, or artwork, you have made previously. Use this connection to make a new work, and so on. Record the connection between the works as you go.

Searching Google Images, Google Books, and Google Scholar can also be very useful. The entries in this free online encyclopedia often include bibliographies, references, and links to related entries. Consult sites created by museums, libraries, archives, galleries, and others that provide information on artists.

Direct contact—by phone, email, social media, or in person—with the museum's Curatorial department is best. This will show them your initiative and your interest in the museum. Again, after a positive personal interaction, submit your proposal through a formal channel (U.S. Mail or online).

Step 1: Brainstorm Ideas

Hudson River School (1826-70)

While strongly influenced by European traditions from Colonial times onward, during the 19th century, several homegrown artistic styles arose.
