A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to speak to graduating seniors from the CWU Business about some of the financial realities of life post-grad. We chatted about emergency funds, values-based budgeting, and setting realistic savings goals. As a financial advisor - and Central Washington University grad - I was SO excited to see the number of hands that shot up when I asked "who here tracks spending?". These students are way ahead of the game!In preparing for this presentation, I reflected back on my own experiences as a first-generation college student, entering the workforce at 21 years old. I can recall the exciting times -like attending my first client meetingand the less exciting times - like finding a roommate on Craigslist. One "first" that sticks with me today, was one of my first shopping experiences with a real paycheck and starting to buy professional clothing that was comfortable, presentable, and helped bolster my confidence as a particularly young professional.This memory is one of the reasons that I am so excited to share that I partnered with Julie Back, CFP and Wealthspire Advisors to provide four students with gift cards to help build their professional wardrobes. Today was the 2nd (and last) full day of #FPARetreat ! Here are the highlights from today’s sessions:- Learning about the “Hype Cycle” in Dr. Gurpreet Dhaliwal’s presentation on the integration of #AI into the medical field and identifying where I am on the AI adoption curve. - Joining in a phenomenal roundtable discussion about a new partnership with Financial Planning Association (FPA) & Money.com, facilitated by the one and only Ben Lewis. I’m excited to see how this partnership helps to continue elevating the profession and increasing visibility with consumers. - Looking backwards at the history of FPA NexGen and what lies ahead with Kevin R. Clark, CFP®, CIMA®, Autumn Knutson, CFP®, Laurie Adams Belew, MBA, MS, CFP (R), and Michael Branham, CFP®. I loved the tips for serving clients of today - “more, smaller bites of the apple” was my favorite. - Digging into present day college planning with College Inside Track, and understanding the true ROI on college costs today.
