Get Your Youth Back With a Breast Lift (2024)

Breast sagging is something that every woman will experience. And yet, there are many things about this common cosmetic concern that are unclear. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Hayley Brown hopes to clear up the confusion by answering questions about sagging breasts.

Can Sagging Breasts Be Firm Again?

Sagging breast tissue cannot regain its youthful firmness without plastic surgery. Unfortunately, measures such as exercising your chest muscles, eating healthy, and applying topical creams are not enough to correct pronounced sagging and drooping. A breast lift is the only way to significantly tighten and elevate the skin of your breasts for a noticeable boost in firmness.

At What Age Do Breasts Start to Sag?

Breast sagging can begin in your twenties or thirties. It can also happen later in life. There is no set age at which breast sagging starts. Instead, it depends on many personal factors, including:

  • Breast size
  • Multiple pregnancies
  • Smoking
  • Significant weight fluctuations

The most common cause of saggy breasts is a loss of skin elasticity due to aging. Large breast size, hormonal changes during pregnancy, and nicotine use are a few other contenders. However, contrary to popular belief, choosing to breastfeed does not affect breast firmness.

Does Not Wearing a Bra Cause Breast Sagging?

The relationship between bras and breast sagging is complicated. In general, going braless does not change your risk of breast sagging. However, there is one important exception.

Bras matter when performing high-impact exercises that cause breast motion. Breast motion during exercise is thought to cause issues like tissue damage and stretched ligaments. A sports bra supports your breasts during intense physical activity to prevent workout-related stretching.
