The King Of Fruits

For the rest of the world, durian may be a stinky fruit, but it is known as the 'king of fruits' in Southeast Asia. It looks like a jackfruit, but has an overpowering smell.

In 2018, the Southeast Asian cousin of jackfruit took a trip to space. In an attempt to make Thai food available to astronauts in space, Thailand's Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) sent durian to monitor physical changes.

A Native Of Malaysia

Durian earned its name from the Malay word 'duri' which means thorns. In fact, the national fruit of Malaysia is available throughout the year.

One Fruit To Rule Them All

Durian is a popular fruit in Southeast Asian countries like Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and some parts of China. Malaysia and Thailand account for around 90 per cent of the total durian production in the world.

People in Southeast Asia hold durian in the highest regard. It is important to note that the fruit is an acquired taste. People who may be trying it for the first time may find its aroma strong and overpowering.​

No Durians Allowed

Despite being a delicacy, the fruit is banned for transportation in countries like Thailand, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong. In fact, 'No Durians' signs are plastered all across airports and hotels in these countries, thanks to its peculiar and pungent smell which can linger for days.

The Superfruit

Durian may face flak for its strong aroma but is said to be a nutritional fruit. It contains essential vitamins B and C, and minerals like potassium, manganese and fibre.

A Status Symbol

Priced at more than Rs 500 per kg, the costly fruit is considered as a status symbol in China. As it grows in popularity, this hot commodity is now a part of various food and drink recipes in cafes and restaurants in the country.

Top on China's list, durian is considered the perfect gift to impress future in-laws or treat the newly-weds. It is also common for people to gift the stinky fruit to a girlfriend as a symbol of love.
