CAN I EAT TACOS ON KETO?

This was probably my first question when I went low carb and the answer is not if they are conventional fish tacos.

Most taco meat (beef, chicken, pork, seafood) is keto-friendly/low in carbs as long as the marinade or seasoning doesn't contain a ton of sugar or the meat is not breaded. And other taco fixings (lettuce, tomato, avocado, hot sauce, sour cream, etc) are low carb as well.

Where the issue arises is what do you use to get the taco meat and fillings from the plate to your face! Regular corn or flour tortillas are a no-go.

So, between the breading and corn or flour tortillas, as well as frying in vegetable oil traditional fish tacos are not keto-friendly clocking in at about 21 net carbs per taco!

You can use a lettuce wrap or cheese shell, and I have done that. They are tasty and do knock out that taco craving pretty well and will keep your carb count low.

I use myKeto Tortilla recipenow and it has been a game-changer.

Now I feel like I am eating "real" tacos and all of the non-keto people in my life have zero clue they are eating low-carb!

This recipe served on one of my keto tortillas is only 2.5 net carbs per taco!

Helpful Hint: 💡: If possible, marinate the fish with the Mexican seasoning blend and avocado oil for up to 30 minutes before cooking. This allows the flavors to penetrate deeper, making the fish even more flavorful.

SUBSTITUTIONS

  • Fish- You can use your favorite firm white fish for this recipe, cod, halibut, mahi-mahi, and even tilapia work well for this.
  • Tortillas- My homemade keto tortillas are perfect if you want a corn tortilla-like texture, otherwise any store-bought keto tortilla will work. Just remember to adjust the carb count.
  • Queso Fresco- If you cannot find queso fresco cheese you can use Cotija or even parmesan cheese in its place.

🍽Equipment

This is the equipment you will need to make Easy Keto Fish Tacos.

Storage

Storing Leftover Fish

  1. Cool Down: Allow the cooked fish to cool to room temperature before storing.
  2. Refrigerate: Place the fish in an airtight container or wrap it tightly in aluminum foil or plastic wrap. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  3. Freeze: If you plan to store the fish for longer, place it in a freezer-safe container or heavy-duty freezer bag. Label with the date and freeze for up to 2 months. To prevent freezer burn, ensure all air is removed from the bag before sealing.

Storing Tortillas

  1. Refrigerate: Store unused tortillas in an airtight container or resealable plastic bag in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
  2. Freeze: For longer storage, place tortillas in a freezer-safe bag, separating each tortilla with parchment paper to prevent sticking. Freeze for up to 2 months.

Reheating Instructions

  1. Fish:
    • Microwave: Place the fish on a microwave-safe plate and cover with a damp paper towel. Heat on medium power for 1-2 minutes or until warmed through.
    • Oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the fish in an oven-safe dish and cover with aluminum foil. Heat for 10-15 minutes or until warmed through.
    • Skillet: Reheat the fish in a lightly oiled skillet over medium heat for 3-5 minutes, turning occasionally, until heated through.
  2. Tortillas:
    • Microwave: Place tortillas on a microwave-safe plate and cover with a damp paper towel. Heat on high for 20-30 seconds or until warm.
    • Oven: Wrap tortillas in aluminum foil and place in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 10-15 minutes.
    • Skillet: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and warm each tortilla for about 30 seconds on each side.

Additional Toppings

Store any leftover toppings such as shredded cabbage, cilantro lime crema, diced tomatoes, chopped cilantro, and queso fresco separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator. Use within 2-3 days for best freshness.

💭Top tip

To achieve the perfect flaky texture, avoid overcooking the fish. Keep an eye on the fillets and remove them from the heat as soon as they turn opaque and start to flake easily with a fork.

FAQ about Easy Keto Fish Tacos

Can I use a different type of fish for this recipe?

Absolutely! This recipe works well with various types of firm white fish like cod, tilapia, halibut, or mahi-mahi. Feel free to use your favorite or what’s fresh and available.

How do I prevent the fish from sticking to the skillet?

Ensure your skillet or grill pan is properly heated before adding the oil and fish. Also, avoid moving the fish too soon. Let it cook on one side until it naturally releases from the pan before flipping.

How do I keep the fish from falling apart?

Make sure the fish is patted dry before seasoning and cooking. Cook it over medium-high heat and avoid flipping too often. Let it cook undisturbed until it’s ready to be turned, which helps maintain its structure.
