What is the secret to dart throwing? ›

Throwing the Dart

Stand up straight and try not to lean forward too much. Turn your face so it is facing the dart board and use both eyes to firmly aim. Your elbow should be fixed at a position that is most comfortable when slowly lowering the hand holding the dart from above your head.

One of the best tips for getting better at darts is to practice throwing at smaller target areas (doubles and trebles) and to try and hit specific scores on the board. Rather than just throwing darts aimlessly at the board, try throwing at a specific double or treble to help you improve your accuracy.

Time per day

The most any practice day should be is 3.5 hours, which equals a maximum of four full sessions with proper breaks. If you are going for a big practice day then you will need to lengthen the breaks in-between each hour, making the actual practice day last almost 5-6 hours.

The Follow Through

This means that after every throw of the dart, you pause for a few seconds with your arm and hand extended toward the target you were aiming for. Not only does this help solve some typical dart throwing mistakes, but it is one of the best things you can do to make your dart throw consistent.

If your dart goes down and right, or up and left you are probably Moving your elbow. If your dart always ends up left of where you aim, you are probably putting Body English into your throw. If your dart spins as you release it, there is a Grip Problem.

They are: leading with your elbow, finding a sight line on your throwing hand, aiming directly at your target, and knowing and using your dominant eye while aiming. Position your elbow so that it points directly at the dartboard, and if possible, slightly upwards.

There is an exercise you can do where you keep your arm still and use only your wrist to throw the dart. When you do this try to hit around the bull, then once you have that down work on doing the same wrist motion while moving your are forward. That should help with power consistency.

Do soft tip darts work? ›

Soft tip darts are a lot lighter than steel tip darts by around 20–30g which means that they allow for a lighter, streamlined throw. But this also means that soft tip darts have been criticised for their lack of precision during play in comparison to their steel counterparts.

From player to player it will differ on how often you use a dart sharpener, but as a rule every time you get your darts out of the case it is worth a quick check to see how the points look and feel. Are they too sharp or too blunt or are they in good shape with a rounded point?

Repointing Darts Without Tool

Insert the point of the pen or pencil into the dart barrel and turn it until the new point is in the correct position.

It is important that your shoulder, elbow and hand are all aligned and you form a 90 degree angle (as seen in the diagram below). Position the dart towards the target you are aiming for and with your dominant eye focus in on the target, rather than looking at the dart you are about to throw.

For example, one way to achieve a nine-dart finish is to score 60 (treble 20) on each of the first seven throws, then a 57 (treble 19) on the eighth, and lastly a 24 (double 12) on the ninth.

The objective is to be the first player to reduce the score to exactly zero, the only caveat being that the last dart thrown must land in a double or the bullseye.
