Cost of Living in Beijing, China
The cost of living in Beijing is more affordable than most cities in the West. However, as the cultural and political center of China, Beijing has one of the highest cost of living in the country along with Shanghai. Beijing is not cheap especially for those who demand a specific standard of comfort and luxury.
Beijing companies usually offer lucrative salary packages. For this reason, internationals are attracted to live in the city. Foregoing the consumer culture in Beijing can help save a great deal of money and expenses will not be a concern. The cost of living index in Beijing is 56.40% lower than in New York and London.
Accommodation
Property prices have been increasing steadily over the past decade, and foreigners will find that both buying and renting accommodation in Beijing can cost a huge amount of money. A one bed-room apartment can cost you a rental fee between US $600 to $1,000 per month.
Food
Although housing is quite high in Beijing, food is relatively cheap. A standard meal will cost you around US $3 to $3.50.
Transportation
Beijing’s transportation is one of the largest in the world. The city has airports, trains, buses, subways, taxis and even rickshaws. Hailing a taxi will cost you US $1.40 to $2 while subways are cheaper at US $.30.
Utilities
Utilities in Beijing often work on a pre-paid basis. This includes heating, phone and internet bills, electricity and water. Compared to other Chinese cities, utilities are more affordable in Beijing. Expect to pay around US $28 to $70 per month.
Education
University education is higher in Beijing that other cities in China. Some of the top universities in China such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, Renmin University of China (RUC) and Beihang University (BUAA) are located in Beijing. Depending on the program, yearly tuition can range from US $4,200 to 56,000.
Miscellaneous expenses
Beijing is an ideal destination for immersing in the Asian and Chinese culture. Traveling around Beijing can cost you around US $4 to 14. The city also has a vibrant nightlife, colorful festivals and great food. A bottle of beer and some street food snacks can cost you US $2 to $4, a movie ticket at $7, a standard haircut at $10 and so on.
