What is Chinese Char Siu BBQ Sauce?

Because you might be asking yourself what exactly is Char Siu, we have the answer.

If you stroll through Chinatown, you may see red pork hanging in the grocery windows. That vibrant color of Chinese pork is from the Char Siu sauce. Traditionally made from the marinade of fermented red soy, it can be very bright in hue. Char Siu can also be made with soy sauce, honey, ketchup, and spices.

Most of us have tried this delicious Chinese barbecue sauce and still may not know it by name.

Fresh, fluffy chow mein with authentic Chinese flavors.

The noodles and Char Siu sauce can be found in the Asian aisle of grocery stores, but I found these both ingredients in the Oakland, CA Cost Plus World Market store. Find your store //here//

The flavors on the sauce and noodles were amazing, so I highly recommend you try them. You can buy them both on the Cost Plus World Marketwebsite or in store.

Getting my Table Ready for the Year of the Dog

I always giggle when I remember that I was born in Chinese astrology in the year of the Pig. We are considered considerate, independent, and optimistic. I’ll take it!

Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, we celebrated Chinese New Year every year. Part of that tradition was to receive coin envelopes, make paper lanterns and eat traditional foods. Additionally, I always appreciated that this holiday involves spring cleaning as well. Any holiday rooted in culture and history holds a BIG place in my heart.

As you can see my passion lives on for this holiday.

In addition to a large offering of international foods, you will discover Cost Plus World Market is a great place to findChinese New Year Decorations. These detailed blue and white ginger jars are hand painted in different shades. They have many traditional style jars and vases that fit right into my colorful Lunar New Year decor.

I filled my jars with gorgeous wildflowers, kale, and roses. I also picked up other Lunar New Year compliments. This included a fortune book, fortune cookies, Chinese New Year Party Decor and lucky chocolate gold medallions.

I am READY!

Let’s Get Cooking!

One of the best parts of making chow mein is all the fresh vegetables. There are 4-5 cups of vegetables packed in 3-4 servings.

My husband was wildly impressed with the result of this recipe, and we haven’t been out to eat Chinese food since we started making this. Do you know how hard it is to take pictures of food when you are super hungry? This was really hard.

Traditionally Char Siu is made with pork. So many people do not eat pork, so we used chicken as a substitution.

This recipe had me inspired, so I wanted to add some more authentic Asian dishes to my dinner.

I picked up the Lucky Peach Presents 101 Asian Recipes cookbook. This green onion salad I made from the cookbook recipe was fresh with a little heat. So easy to make, even if my pile never made it up as tall at the Statue of Liberty.

What a great idea for a Chinese New Year DIY meal!

Time:

  • Prep & Marinade: 30 minutes
  • Cook Time: 10-15 minutes
  • Servings: 3-4

Ingredients:

  • 1 package skinless, boneless chicken breast
  • I package fresh chow mein (soft noodles)
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • 2 stalk celery, chopped
  • 1 cup shredded carrots
  • 1 cup napa cabbage, chopped
  • 1 cup bok choy, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

    • 3 large garlic cloves, finely chopped

Steps:

  1. In a medium mixing bowl, stir together soy sauce, garlic and Char Siu sauce.
  2. Chop uncooked chicken into 1-inch cubes. Place in the bowl with marinade. Mix gently, marinade in fridge at least 30 minutes.
