He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jacqueline Koolhaas Gerritsen, his children,RobGerritsen, Philadelphia, Pa.; Jeroen (Jingyee Kou) Gerritsen,Baltimore,M.D.;his grandchildren, Keith (Kate Sundeen), Corey (Sara Elice), Jeffrey,Tristan,and Alida Gerritsen; two sisters-in-law; and a brother-in-lawin TheNetherlands.
He was born Nov. 29, 1913, in The Hague, The Netherlands to Sander GerritsenandGerritje van der Willik. He earned a bachelor's degree in physics fromLeidenUniversityin 1933 and was accepted there for further graduate study. However,World WarII intervened, and he was mobilized into the NetherlandsArmy in 1938as a medic.After the Dutch capitulation in May 1940, he went back to the universityto resumehis studies. He managed to continue his scientificresearch duringthe war years,and also joined the Dutch Resistance movement, for whom he smuggledforged documentsand contraband, for assistance toJews and Resistance fightersin hiding. Atthe university he met Jacqueline Koolhaas, and they married in1943. After thewar, he was able to resume hisstudies in full and obtainedhis Ph.D. in physicsin 1948. He was appointed Instructor at Leiden Universityat that time.
In 1956, he was appointed Assistant Professor at Purdue, and the family movedtoWest Lafayette. There he taught and continued his research in low temperaturephysics,studyingthe electromagnetic properties of transistors and semiconductorsattemperatures colder than -196 ÀC (-321 ÀF). He always supported the arts,withabidinginterests in classical music, architecture, and visual arts. Heencouragedhis wife in her development as an Indiana artist.
He retired from Purdue University in 1979 as Emeritus Professor of Physics, andspentsummers in Allenspark, Colo. There, he became involved with theRockyRidge MusicCenter. He was on Rocky Ridge's board of directors for many years,and chairmanduring the 1990's.
